In 2016, SIPD initiated a skills development program as one of its major activities to develop the social and economic capacities of young intersex people in different fields, depending on their natural talent and abilities. The project focuses on young intersex people who have dropped out of school due to different challenges like stigma and discrimination etc and don’t have any trade-able skill to earn a living. They are given a chance to engage in a six month apprenticeship program of their choice including hair dressing, tailoring, automotive mechanics, piggery farming, motorcycle repair and driving.
The project is proving to create a sense of self-worth and economic independence and empower the youth to have greater control of the narrative of their condition and feel more confident to educate their peers about it and at that level, influence political conversations around their sex development differences and violations and start community rights advocacy actions for others like them.
